छत्रपती शिवाजी महाराजांच्या काळात कागदपत्रांवर दोन प्रकारच्या मुद्रा उमटवल्या जायच्या. त्यात पत्राच्या सुरुवातीला राजमुद्रा असायची.

प्रतिपच्चन्द्रलेखेव वर्धिष्णुर्विश्ववन्दिता ।
शाहसूनोः शिवस्यैषा मुद्रा भद्राय राजते ।।
Meaning: The glory of this Mudra of Shahaji’s son Shivaji (Maharaj ) will grow like the first-day moon. It will be worshiped by the world and it will shine only for well being of people.

तर पत्राच्या शेवटी मर्यादा मुद्रा असायची. मर्यादा मुद्रेवरचा मजकूर होता, “मर्यादेय विराजते”. याचा अर्थ इथे लेखनाची मर्यादा म्हणजे शेवट झाला. मर्यादा मुद्रेच्या पुढे कुणीही कोणता मजकूर लिहू नये यासाठी मर्यादा मुद्रेचा वापर केला जायचा.
